4 Tips for Braces & Invisalign

Bisig + Chermak + Rudnicke Orthodontics is the place to be for the best in orthodontic treatment. That might be a big statement, but we like to think there are some pretty big reasons why! Not least of those reasons is how we work hard to keep you and your family in the know when it comes to how to make the most of your treatment, so read on to get 4 tips on how to make the most of your braces or Invisalign!

#1: Stick to a Solid Daily Routine

Modern metal braces and Invisalign both rely on one thing to work properly: consistency. Staying on top of your daily habits helps avoid setbacks, keeps your mouth healthy, and ensures your treatment stays right on schedule. A good routine isn’t just about cleaning—it’s about protecting your progress from day one.

Brush and Floss Like It Matters

Oral hygiene matters even more during orthodontic treatment. Brackets and wires make it easier for food to get stuck and plaque to build up. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day helps keep your teeth strong and your gums healthy—so when the braces come off, your smile looks as good as it feels.

If you’re wearing clear aligners, brushing after meals is just as important. Food particles left behind can get trapped between your aligners and teeth, increasing your risk for cavities or bad breath. Keep a travel toothbrush handy so you’re never caught off guard.

Aligners Need a Cleaning Routine Too

Just like your teeth, clear aligners need daily care. Rinsing them with lukewarm water every time you remove them helps keep bacteria in check. You can also use a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste) or a specialty aligner cleaner to gently scrub away any buildup.

Avoid hot water—it can warp the trays—and never use harsh cleaners that might damage the plastic. A clean aligner means a clearer, more discreet look and better long-term oral health.

Don’t Skip Retainer Time (if applicable)

If you’ve already finished your treatment and moved on to retainers, the routine still matters. Retainers need daily cleaning and consistent wear to keep your teeth in place. Skipping even a few nights can lead to unwanted shifting, which can undo months—or years—of hard work.

#2: Watch What You Eat and Drink

Your food choices can have a big impact on how smoothly your treatment goes. From sticky candies that can damage braces to dark drinks that stain aligners, it’s worth paying attention to what’s on your plate (and in your cup). A little caution now can save you from extra appointments later.

Foods to Avoid with Braces

Braces come with a short no-go list—and it’s not just to be picky. Sticky, crunchy, or hard foods can break brackets or bend wires, delaying your progress. That includes things like gum, popcorn, hard pretzels, and chewy candies.

Cutting fruits and veggies into smaller pieces, skipping tough meats, and steering clear of crunchy snacks can keep your braces intact and your treatment moving forward without interruption.

How Drinks Affect Clear Aligners

Wearing clear aligners? That iced coffee or flavored water might be doing more harm than you think. Most drinks—other than plain water—can stain or warp aligners, especially if they’re hot or acidic. Worse, sugary beverages can increase your risk of decay if trapped under the trays.

Remove your aligners before drinking anything but water, and rinse your mouth before putting them back in. It’s a small habit that makes a big difference.

Quick Snacks Can Still Be Smart

Even with dietary limitations, there are still plenty of braces-friendly and aligner-approved snacks. Soft fruits, cheese sticks, yogurt, smoothies, and applesauce all make great options that won’t damage appliances or compromise oral health.

It’s not about giving up everything you like—it’s about finding choices that work with your treatment instead of against it.

#3: Keep Your Orthodontic Tools Handy

Whether you’re out for the day or just heading to school, it helps to have the right tools within reach. Unexpected moments happen—like a poking wire, a misplaced aligner, or food stuck in your brackets—and a well-stocked kit makes them easier to handle without stress.

What to Pack in a Braces Kit

A small pouch with a few essentials can go a long way. Orthodontic wax is great for stopping irritation on the go. Travel toothbrushes and floss picks help keep your mouth clean when you’re not at home. You might also throw in a mini mirror, nail clippers (for snipping loose bands if needed), and some tissues.

Keeping this kit in your backpack, car, or locker can turn little problems into non-issues and keep you feeling more in control throughout the day.

Aligners? Don’t Forget Your Case

If you’re wearing clear aligners, always carry your case. Always. Wrapping your aligners in a napkin during lunch is the #1 way they end up in the trash. The case protects them from damage, keeps them clean, and ensures they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

We also recommend keeping a backup case at school or in your bag. That way, even if you forget one, you’re not stuck choosing between wearing dirty aligners or skipping wear time.

Keep Wax and Extra Elastics Close

If you’re using elastics with braces, stash a spare pack somewhere convenient. They’re easy to lose or forget, and wearing them as instructed is key to correcting your bite on schedule. Wax is equally important—one tiny piece can save you from hours of irritation.

Your orthodontist will provide these at visits, but it’s smart to have extras ready. A little preparation can make a big difference in how comfortable your treatment feels.

#4: Communicate With Your Orthodontist

Your orthodontic team is here for more than just scheduled adjustments. If something feels off—or you’re just unsure what to do next—don’t hesitate to reach out. Small issues caught early are easier to fix, and ongoing communication helps you stay confident and informed throughout your treatment.
